What happens when you use a 64 does the ds not recognize it?

It's really easier to understand than you think...
SD cards have capacities up to 2GB (Some 2GB+ cards were produced, up to 4GB, these are proprietary though and will not work on most devices).
SDHC cards have capacities from 4GB up to 32GB.
SDXC cards have capacities from 64GB up to 2TB.
All docks are
backwards compatible, so an SD dock will not read an SDHC card etc.
The 3DS and the DSi have an SDHC dock, hence only cards up to 32GB will be accepted.
This is all you need to know, really.
