R4i Save Dongle Official Review

[User Posted Image]
The R4i Save Dongle

[User Posted Image]The R4i Save Dongle is exactly what you would think, it can extract/replace save files on game cartridges. This is specifically why it was built. It is usable with every game cartridge, from DS games to 3DS games. It is able to extract the correct save file in the known format of .sav, which allows it to be recognised by game save editors.

Your R4i Save Dongle will be shipped in a red box, with nothing else apart from the dongle itself. The dongle feels quite sturdy and not all that heavy. It's a bit on the big side, but not too big.

Features of the R4i Save Dongle

Features that are listed on the back of the box:
  • Fully support 3DS,NDSi,NDSl original game cart.
  • Backup game savers from 3DS/NDS/NDSI original game card to PC, to avoid game saver been accidently overwrite.
  • Restore game savers backup from PC to 3DS/NDS/NDSI original game cart through USB.
  • Editing game savers(level, experience, money etc ...) becomes possible.
  • Allow game savers to be share between users.
    a. User can share or download game savers from official website and forums
    b. Game savers sharing allow user jump to certain game level.
  • Upgradeable dongle firmware through USB for support new games and new features.
  • User friendly software interface to manage the save file
Lots of Google translate, but the point gets across.
PC Software
[User Posted Image]The PC software is quite straightforward. It has one button which is used to get the save and another button which is used to write the save. You can download everything you need from here, just scroll down to the app download sector. You need the SaveDongle backup/restore, the Firmware Uploader, the 3DSSaveTool v0.2b and when necessary the drivers.

[User Posted Image]The upgrade software is relatively simple too. You first need to download a firmware file from the official site. Once you have the latest firmware, upgrading is a breeze. Two buttons do the trick, one on the PC and one on the dongle. Wait for a few seconds then you are done.

Once done with extracting the save, you can upload it to the official site. From this site you can also download saves from others who have uploaded. Picking the correct save is easy-peasy as the saves are tagged correctly, have a short description and are checked by staff of the site.

Cartridge Compatibility
I have tested the Save Dongle with the following games. I tested them by retrieving my own save and putting someone else's save back.

Putting my own save back always worked and restoring saves from flashcarts also works. My tests did however reveal that there seems to be some problems with restoring saves to certain 3DS carts. All the tests were done with update v1.3 and the backup/restore program v1.5.

3DS Games
[E]Mario Kart 7 - Getting save works Restoring save doesn't
[E]Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition - Works
[E]The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Edition - Works
[E]Super Mario 3D Land - Works
[E]PilotWings Resort - Getting save works Restoring save doesn't
[E]Tales of the Abyss - Getting save works Restoring save doesn't

DS Games
[E]Kirby Mouse Attack - Works
[E]Pokemon Black - Works
[E]Pokemon Pearl - Works
[E]Pokemon SoulSilver - Works
[E]Golden Sun Dark Dawn - Works
Final Conclusion

Pro
  • Does exactly what it says, backing up DS/3DS save files.
  • Easy to use software
  • Write saves from other people to your original game cart.
  • You can use to it to write flashcart saves to original game carts.

Con
  • Certain games don't work.
  • Bulky in appearance, blocks room for another USB stick.
  • Build quality isn't perfect.

Final Score: 75%

Good review! Has someone told them that those games don't work so they can fix it?

A new form of 3DS savefile decryption got introduced with a new 3DS firmware update a few months ago. Unfortunately they can't simply fix it for these 3DS savefiles, it needs to get cracked first.
