confused How would I go about this, I remember that there are tools to backup the cart and the save game to R4 but I don't know of any that do the reverse.
Would the R4 format even work on an original cart?

I think you can do that with an action replay ds.

any way of doing that with an R4? Maybe a tool that converts the R4 save game to another?

No idea how you would go about doing that on an R4, but it is definitely possible with the R4i Save Dongle.
