DesertDog of Multiple Option has coded an educational application for DS an entered it into this years Neo Summer Coding Compo.
"Japanese Hiragana & Katakana Review is a kana character review tool aimed at upper-beginner and intermediate Japanese students. The application allows the user to review their ability to recognize each of the 46 hiragana or katakana characters from visual and audio cues. Performance is ranked by speed, mistakes made and review difficulty. The application will also highlight the user's weakest kana characters for further study. Features include voice samples from native Japanese speakers, Rumble Pak and DS Motion support. Cute bonus: the application will greet you appropriately depending on the time of day!"

You will be able to read the menus most of the time... but that's all... you won't get a thing about the story... Anyway there are like.. 46x2 kanas... it's somewhat easy to memorize, you'll get it pretty fast, so it's worth it... And guessing what's the engrish word behind de kanas isn't that hard.
Upper beginner and intermediate? When I studied Japanese, we had to learn hiragana/katakana the first 3 weeks of the semester. By the time you're intermediate, you should know hiragana/katakana and about 100 kanji. Nice looking tool nevertheless.

^This.
While I appreciate the effort that must have went into this project, if you need to review something as simple as hiragana and katakana at the intermediate level or even upper beginner level, perhaps Japanese isn't for you.
yeah if you take a Japanese class they will drill those into your head within the first month. No matter how much Japanese vocab I forgot while learning Korean I can't forget hiragana and katakana, it's like the alphabet now, permanently imprinted in my mind.
