/// THE UNIVERSAL CHILD'S PLAY PATCH WAS UPDATED!! ///

How to play "Wizardry" on your DSTT and R4

1. Download Patch.rar and get a Patch.exe file from the RAR archive.

2. Drag your ROM and drop it onto the Patch.exe. That's all.

Note:
This path is not only for "Wizardry". "Wizardry" is one of game to be patched by Universal Child's Play Patch.
The file having the ".bak" extension is the backup copy of the original nds file.

The series is long dead in the west.  Only Japan still makes Wizardry games and you can tell the style is somewhat different from the original ones.

Really, it's a good metaphor for what happened to rpgs in general.  I'm so glad Japan picked up the torch after the west dropped it.  I don't think there's been any real western RPGs for any system in 5 years or more.  The modern western "rpg" is always at least half fps or action, etc.

Thanks for the info about the game and the patch.

i understand what you're sayin, but i dont necessarily agree. The way I see it, the only requirement for an RPG should be that it is immersive and involve decisions that affect a range of factors in the storyline, opposed to just character stats, regardless of the game mechanic used. Adding a hand-eye factor to the gameplay simply makes it more involving.

in a sense, a pure action game with branching paths, like starfox, is more of an rpg than most rpgs.

An RPG is usually highly story-based and puts emphasis on character development. Think of it like this: Can you play it with pen'n paper on a table? If yes, then it's a pure RPG. If no, then it isn't. If inbetween, then you got a mix.

Games like Wizardry (and The Dark Spire) pretty much follow the typical pen'n paper style, and are pure RPG because of that. Zelda, too, is RPG, but with alot of action and puzzling mixed in, so it isn't purely one anymore (hence action-RPG). Only having a branching storyline and being immersive isn't enough. If you follow that, Warcraft is an RPG too, and so are Command & Conquer and the likes. They're strategy games, though, not RPGs.

That said, any chance for an English version? I'm itching for another Dark Spire grin

The Wizardry games, as far as I know them, don't have much of a story. Sure, there's a setting, some talk and a reason why you go into the dungeon, but from then on it's just "Yeah go to the bottom of the dungeon and slay that guy". So it's a dungeon crawl, a hack & slash.
I'm not sure how complex these later Wizardry games get, but if it's on the level of other JRPGs, then I don't see why you would play this. The most tactically sophisticated thing you'll see in a JRPG is something along the lines of "Oh, it's an ice monster, let's use fire spells!"
In the 80s that might have been adequate, but for a game that has no real story, I'd rather have a bit more depth.
Otherwise, games like these are for people who enjoy playing a game where they kill kobolds for 2 hours and then being overly happy and excited because their fighters HP is now 60 instead of 25 and his AC improved by 4 with the new found plate mail, whereas others would have seen this as 2 wasted hours.

exactly, now compare to this game http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1631 (which you can download for free)
EXTREMELY punishing level of difficulty, but at the same time shit actually happens that resembles a story. it's not so much a "random encounter" as it is "you are attacked by fuckin wolves who can totally mess you up"

im not saying rpgs shouldn't be called rpgs and that starfox should, I just think there arent enough games that really let you play a role effectively, or at the very least give your imagination enough room to think so. I think wizardry type games try to achieve the "imagine in the blanks" business, but they just dont do it for me.

hot damn somebody needs to make a Barbarian Prince homebrew.

I wouldn't even go as far as calling most JRPGs games :P They usually are cutscenes, linked together with frustratingly similar random battles. If I play an RPG, I want a good story, yeah. I want to also play a game. That's where most JRPGs go up in smoke. They could just as well be a book.

Edit: It might not be for the DS, and it might not be that Barbarian thing, but there's a freeware version of Hero Quest, which you can find here.
