Phillips released a homebrew translator application named NewDictS, with multiple dictionary support and sound replication.

Quote
Phillips released several weeks ago a working homebrew translator with fat support for DS with the help of PALib.
He only published it in chinese so it seems that it did not get some notice from the english speaking world. The program, which is using stardict dictionary files, is currently running on R4 (Thanks Phillips!!), M3SD and SCSD!

To get it running you need the appropriate file for your card. Create the folder: "NewDicts" at the root of your card. In the folder "NewDicts" create a subfolder called "Dict".
Copy the downloaded dictionaries in that folder(up to 10 different dics are supported, prefix must be the same per dictionary).
The files with the .dz ending must be deflated, ending with .dict (try 7zip to do that).
Attention the .idx file size is limited to something smaller than 2.5 MB.
Example:
StardictBritannicaConcise consists of:
BritannicaConcise.ifo
BritannicaConcise.idx
BritannicaConcise.dict
in folder root:NewDictsDict

Works on an EZV as well if you re-patch it with the EZV DLDI patch.  Haven´t played much with getting the soundbanks to work, since it doesn´t say how to do it and I can´t read chinese, but if you ignore the chinese menu on the left I now have a fully functional French-English dictionary on my DS.  Wow, one of these things is actually USEFUL for me... creepy.

Just a note, you can also install those on your computer.

Go to this site

http://stardict.sourceforge.net/index.php and download first the GTK plus runtime environment program and install. Then download the Stardict-2.4.8 (for windows) and install that (in this order) then go searching for dictionaries

here

http://stardict.sourceforge.net/Dictionaries.php

and follow the rest of the instructions on this page (here you can search for whatever dictionaries you want. As it says, the tarball files are the ones you want to download for just the dictionary, the other file, if available is a bunch of wav files I believe). Pretty sweet. If you do it this way you dont need to use 7zip to extract again. Just extract once and place them in the C:Program files/stardict/dic file as they are.

I have not tested it on my Simply yet, due to my USB ports being screwed on my computer, but, already the 2.5mb limit looks like a hassle. On the computer there is no limit. You can have the crazy ass Chinese to English bi-directional 21st century science dictionary if you want with 800 000 entries!

For those on the DS

download the appropriate ROM on your DS. Patch it with the appropriate DLDI.

Then download one of the dictionaries the same as before. However, you will need to use 7zip to extract the DZ file and make it into a dict file. Then just follow the rest of the instructions as pointed out above. There is only two things you need to do with the files. One is extract them using Winrar etc. Then go to the DZ file and extract that with 7zip so to make it into a DICT file.

FYI, in the Winrar extracted file you will have a subtitle file which is the .idx file mentioned, a DVD file, which is the IFO mentioned and a DZ (.dict or .dz but you need to extract with 7zip as said) file.

Hope that helps.

Well, no surprise it works on the DS Simply fine. Pretty cool.

Kind of nuts....does lack an Italian to English dictionary however....but has a lot of everything else. Even farsi!!

When it tells to put the dictionary into the NewDicts/Dict root directory dont put the folder but the three files (.dict, idx, and ifo). The three file s must all be named the same way. Otherwise it wont be able to read it if you leave them in the folders. So just all three files into the /dict file.

The other thing you might have to do is to create a .sav file for the program without having all the dictionaries in that folder, as a couple of times it didnt create the sav file for some reason (started too and then threw a fit). Also, when patching with the appropriate DLDI  do it while the .nds file on the micro SD card.

This is a pretty sweet application as it has dual uses.
